Windows Phone 7's Big Update Not For January
A lot of sites, this one included, have been reporting since November that Microsoft was planning to release a big update for its new platform, including the much anticipated copy and paste feature. It is pretty obvious as this point that January will come and go with nary an update in sight.

Galaxy Tab: A great tablet for the 'can't do Apple' crowd
I'm not anti-Apple -- but I'm not drinking the new Apple-flavored Kool-Aid either. Maybe the commercials picking on Microsoft put me off. The first ones were funny, but then they became mean, like Ricky Gervais at the Golden Globes. As much as I see the value and use of an iPad, I'm stuck in the "can't do Apple" crowd for now, though there are no viable Windows tablets today, just laptops in a tablet design.

WriteMonkey bare-bones text editor now has "typewriter mode" and new syntax coloring
- Text comments: When working on a manuscript, sometimes you may want to add comments and thoughts that should not be included as part of the final text. Now you can preface a paragraph with // (two slashes), and WriteMonkey will regard it as a comment. It would not be included in the word count, you could select not to export it, and its text would be slightly dimmed, using the new syntax coloring engine.
- Typewriter mode: This mode carries WriteMonkey's typewriter metaphor to the extreme. It keeps the text insertion point in the middle of the line, and moves the text around it. So you type and the lines move back and forth. It's actually lots of fun, and can be toggled by hitting Ctrl+Shift+Alt+L.
- More statistics: WriteMonkey's had text statistics for a while now (accessible using F12). These have been made more comprehensive, and they now show average words per sentence, estimated reading time, amount of "hard words" (words with more than 3 syllables), and more. There's also a list of word frequencies so you can avoid repetition. This feature has been around since version 2.0 preview 1, but if you haven't upgraded from 0.9 (the previous "Stable" version), it's a great addition.

Apple to drop app downloads from Mac OS X site next month
Apple will pull all applications from its own Mac OS X download site on the same day that it launches the new Mac App Store early next month, according to reports.
In an e-mail sent to registered Mac developers on Monday, Ron Okamoto, Apple's head of developer relations, said that software town wasn't big enough for both the Mac App Store and the long-running Downloads .

CorelDRAW video tutorial: Make a Polaroid-like image in five minutes
I'm not a graphics pro by any stretch of the imagination, but I do need to turn out a few pretty pixels here and there for my day job. If you're just thinking about getting into vector graphics, or if you've tried Illustrator and it proved too daunting, CorelDRAW might be just what you need.
Rather than just talk about CorelDRAW or write a tutorial, I figured it would be best to show it off in a short video. I took an image of my awesome cat, Ivan, and made it into a Polaroid-like snapshot. It took me less than five minutes, without any templates or saved settings. To see how I did it, hit Play after the fold.
By the way, this is the first of four CorelDRAW tutorials to be published in the next few weeks. If you'd like to see specific aspects of CorelDRAW in action, feel free to let me know in the comments!

ARM CEO: PC market not our target
Chip design firm ARM grabbed the spotlight at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas last week when Microsoft announced that its new Windows OS would work on the ARM architecture. ARM processors go into most of the world's smartphones and tablets, and with Windows support, the company can now focus on the wider market for PCs, where it has virtually no presence. Nvidia also announced that it was building its first ARM-based chip, code-named Denver, for PCs and servers.

Pomodroido is a beautiful Pomodoro timer for Android
That's the gist of the method, but of course, that's a tad over-simplified. You can read all about it on the Pomodoro homepage, and there's a free e-book, too. But even from my brief description, you can probably see a timer is an essential part of the system. And this is where Pomodroido comes in.
It's a beautiful app (literally - it's easy on the eyes), which simply counts down 25 minutes, and then gives you a five-minute break. The duration is configurable, so if you like longer breaks or longer "bursts" of work, you can set that easily.
It also tracks how many "pomodoros" you've successfully completed (a pomodoro is aborted if you're distracted), and gives you awards for doing well. My personal favorite feature is that you can have it continuously emit a ticking sound while the timer is running, just like a kitchen timer would. That's an essential part of the technique, and it really helps me stay focused (it's difficult to forget the pomodoro is running - you can constantly hear it in the background).
The best part is that, because it's on a mobile device, I can get up and walk away from my workstation during the breaks, and still know when to come back to continue working - so the breaks really do feel like breaks.
Speaking of breaks, you can find the QR code right after the break.
