There's (Short-Term) Hope For Greener Storage
Energy demands made by data center storage are expected to start leveling off soon as vendors start making storage with greener, more efficient components. But the effect wont last.

Windows Phone 7 will be a serious game-changer
I use an Android smartphone and I like it. Although iPhones continue to catch my attention and are certainly more polished in many ways, I'm not one to jump on that fad. The BlackBerry is still loved by huge numbers of loyal fans, and the BlackBerry Torch may keep RIM in the game a bit longer. But the new player in the months ahead, the one everyone is going to be watching, is Windows Phone 7.

InfoWorld review: Dell R815 server makes heavy virtualization light on the wallet
There's something different about watching a server process list spanning 48 logical CPUs. It invariably engenders a feeling of raw power, not because each CPU is fast but simply because there are so many of them. Those 48 logical processors show you just what the Dell PowerEdge R815 has to offer: It's a server that needs lots of work to do.

Microsoft Security Essentials: Free, so what's the catch?
Personally, I didn't like Microsoft's Live OneCare security software; every time I worked with it on someone's computer, there was a problem of some sort. Windows Defender, however, as an antispyware tool has gained my trust over the years.

Microsoft: IE9 to require Windows 7 SP1
Microsoft's new Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) browser will require Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1), a not-yet-released major update to the operating system, the company said today.
According to a FAQ posted on the company's site, Windows 7 users will need to install SP1 prior to adding IE9. People running Windows Vista must have that operating system's SP2 in place.

Myspace Rearranges Furniture, Slaps On Fresh Coat of Paint
Will Web-scale servers find a role in the enterprise?
An emerging class of extremely low-power servers is helping Internet companies and hosting providers to slash their energy bills, and proponents say they could have a role in the enterprise as well.
The servers, offered by established players such as Dell and SGI as well as start-ups such as SeaMicro, cut power use by reducing server components to a minimum, aggregating fans and power supplies across several servers, and employing low-power processors normally used in netbooks and other mobile devices, such as Via's Nano processor and Intel's Atom chip.

What Office 365 says about Microsoft
On the day Microsoft announced Office 365, Kurt DelBene, president of the Microsoft Office Division, said: "This resets the bar for what people will expect of productivity applications in the cloud."
Oh, Microsoft. Why must you say these things?
Comment follow-up: WHATSTHISW?RD helps you solve crossword puzzles
When I wrote about Word Domination, several Download Squad readers commented and proposed WHATSTHISW?RD as a possible alternative.
It's as plain as can be: you write an English word with question marks in place of the letters you don't know, and it comes up with a number of alternatives. It does not support multi-letter wildcards (like d*squad); it only supports single characters. That makes sense when it comes to crossword puzzles, because you always know the length of the word that you need.
Much like Word Domination, each word has a link to a dictionary definition. Here, the link leads to Google Dictionary, and it's quite effective (here's the Google Dictionary entry for grain, for example). For some reason, a tiny question mark next to the word is linked instead of the word itself. It's not very convenient, but it works.
Another nice feature for WHATSTHISW?RD is the URL interface. For example, try http://www.whatsthisword.com/whatis/gr-n.aspx. Again, this is almost perfect - if only I did not have to tack on that ".aspx" at the end ... !
Bottom line: I think I prefer Word Domination. Still, competition is always healthy!

Ever since it unveiled the new mobile OS in February, Microsoft has been cagey on whether its new Windows Phone 7 would support direct synchronization with Apple's Macintosh computers. Now a spokeswoman confirms that Microsoft will offer a Mac OS X tool that syncs "selected content" between Macs and Windows Phone 7 devices.

Phras.in helps you decide which of two words you should use
Filed under: Text, Utilities, Education
Here's something that I do all the time: when I want to know how to use a certain word or phrase, I just google it. And when I'm trying to decide on one of two options, I just google them both and see which one is more common, or how it works in a sentence. I use it a lot when I translate ("do people really say that?"), but I also use it when I just write in English.
And now, Phras.in lets me do the exact same thing, but I can do it in style (or is it "with style"? Exactly!) and a great deal faster. So, I just type the words "in style" in the top text box, and then I type "with style" in the bottom text box. By the time I'm done typing, I can see that "in style" got 43.4 million hits, while "with style" has only 23.5 million hits. The search is live, and it's super-fast; there's no Enter required. And clearly, "in style" wins.
But maybe I'm not sure, or I want to see how they're really used. I just have to hit the big Contextualize 'em button, and I get a whole bunch of Google results that show the phrases in their natural habitat.
It even works in Hebrew, so I guess it can handle pretty much anything that you throw at it (anything Google can handle, that is). It's very, very useful!
