Why Thin Is In: Portable Has Never Been Portable, Until Now
According to Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster, Apple is selling a whole mess of MacBook Airs and iPads this year. Sadly, his assessment is based on seven hours spent in Apple stores across the country, but the limited data his efforts have provided does point to some clear trends that we've been following over the past few months. As we discussed this morning, PC growth is slow but constant. Desktop towers are, however, the last thing on most folks minds these days. Devices like the iPad capture the imagination and, more important, they are the first devices to be truly portable. For most of the past decade, we've suffered under a the yoke of slow progress. Laptops ranged from about 4 pounds on the very low end all the way up to twenty pounds on a very bad day. Generally, however, the average fleet laptop - think the ThinkPad or a nice Dell Inspiron - weighed in at about 10 pounds, all told, with extra battery and power adaptor. That was quite a bit to carry around, especially with all of the accoutrements. Source: http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/Techcrunch/~3/Xpd7a3x7u18/

Phone SIM Locks: Why Do Carriers Even Bother?
We've been down this road before: a new iOS version is released that undoes all of the nasty stuff hackers did to the previous version. A week later those same hackers blow out a jailbreak and then a few days later they release a full unlock (the latest iOS unlock is only for 3G and 3GS right now, so iPhone 4 users are stuck for now.) Given that this is pretty much standard procedure, why don't carriers just give up? Sadly, most other phones don't get this sort of white glove treatment. A grey market exists that traffics in phone unlocks for many devices including Blackberries and Nokias. Why? Because someone, somewhere wants to move their phone from country A to country B. The vast majority of phone users will never want to this but there is still plenty of demand. So why not ship without the lock? Well, there are a few possible answers, barring the obvious "Carriers suck."Source: http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/Techcrunch/~3/54z-Yd_sx3E/

The new Mac OS X: What Apple has in store for 2011
With all the attention focused on the iPhone and iPad, you might have forgotten that Apple has a computer called the Mac. Today, Apple previewed the new Mac OS X operating system, to be released in summer 2011, about two years after the release of Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, a refinement of the previous version, Leopard.

Using Video Games to Burn all that Fat Caused by Playing Video Games (TCTV)
HopeLab is a nonprofit video game lab founded by Pam Omidyar, wife of eBay founder Pierre Omidyar. That's right, I said non-profit video game lab. It seeks to make the world better through video games, and it's hoping it has a new hit on its hands with Zamzee. Zamzee combats sedentary behavior by giving kids and teens points for moving more throughout the day and those points can be used to buy virtual goods or exchange for gift cards. Early research shows a whopping 30% jump in activity when people play Zamzee-- the equivalent of running a marathon every month. HopeLabs has decided to spin the game out into a for-profit company to help commercialize the game faster. Richard Tate of HopeLabs joined us via Skype to talk about the game that may be a solution if your kids ate too much Turkey yesterday.Source: http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/Techcrunch/~3/1bYKRen0kuQ/

The 7 terms admins need to demystify to the business
I forget sometimes when I'm talking to friends and family that they have no idea what I mean when I use certain terms. We all do that, right? For example, we'll toss out words like "cloud" when we mean the Internet, not to confuse our audience but because we're caught up in the current technojargon. But when we do so with our business colleagues, we risk confirming IT's propeller-head stereotype and, even worse, having them tune out what we're saying.

Torellis Uncloudy Cloud Moment
There is an old folk song that talks about the promise of an uncloudy day, a time and place where everything is clear, serene and peaceful. Sounds pretty tempting especially if you operate a typical small to midsize business (SMB), where clarity and serenity are seldom the order of the day.
